The State of Iowa is a state in the Midwestern region of the United States of America, an area often referred to as the "American Heartland." It is bordered by Minnesota to the north, Wisconsin and Illinois to the east, Nebraska and South Dakota to the west, and Missouri to the south. The Mississippi River separates Iowa from Illinois and Wisconsin to form the eastern boundary of the state. The Missouri River on the west edge of the state forms the boundary with Nebraska. The Big Sioux River in the northwest corner of the state forms the North/South boundary with South Dakota. To the north lies Minnesota and to the south lies Missouri.

Here was buried Sergeant Charles Floyd, the only casualty of Lewis and Clark's expedition from the Mississippi to the Pacific in 1804-5. Woodbury Country Courthouse, a long, low brick structure, is the largest building so far erected by Chicago's "Prairie school" of architecture.
